maybe i should raise my kids like this...

"Every age and understanding should have its proper discipline. Whenever, therefore, boys or immature youths or such as can not understand how grave a penalty excommunication is, are guilty of a serious fault, let them undergo severe fasting or be disciplined with corporal punishment, that they may be corrected."
- St. Benedict, Chapter 30, "The Holy Rule of St. Benedict"

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing I asked for, but everything I hoped for;
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayer were
answered. I am among all men, most richly blessed!

some brief thoughts after the election

This election is over, but I pray people will not put their faith in any one person, government, or even proposition.  Regardless of what happened with this election, God is still sovereignly working in the world.  People cannot solve the problem that inherently plagues every person on this world.  If Christians believe that one proposition will make a problem go away, then they are all wrong.  The church needs to embrace the fact that the problem is here and the church needs to provide God's solution for it.  We need to stop hiding from the responsibility God has given us to be a light to the world.

After seeing people weeping and crying when they found out that Barack Obama won, I couldn't help but worry where their hope is.  President-elect Obama cannot save the world.  Democrats cannot save the world.  Proposition 8 cannot save the world.  (All that goes for the flip side too) Christians, on our own strength, cannot even save the world.  We can only point to the One who can, and pray for and love those we disagree with wholeheartedly.

Christians, pray for our new leader.  Do not waver in your commitment to pray for the leaders of our country.  Most importantly, pray for those who place their full trust in anything in this world.
